2018 GUIDE TO FESTIVALS

Sarasota Music Festival
Sarasota Music Festival
WHAT DISTINGUISHES THIS FESTIVAL
The short duration of SMF creates an intensive environment and the faculty rotate each week. Participants direct
their own chamber studies by choosing the repertoire and fellow players. Orchestra concerts feature our SMF
alumni as soloists including Noah Bendix-Balgley, Jasmine Choi, Frank Huang, Elena Urioste.
FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
The Sarasota Music Festival is a magical combination of 40 acclaimed faculty artists performing intriguing and
dazzling pieces with 60 students from around the country. Led by Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, the participants
(ages 18-30) perform chamber music together and alongside the faculty. This year’s concerts include an evening of
Baroque music, Appalachian Spring, and Darius Milhaud’s Creation of the World led by Mr. Kahane from the
piano, Mozart Symphony No. 39 conducted by Larry Rachleff as well as many other chamber and
orchestra pieces. Soloists this year include violinist Angelo Xiang Yu, and Vijay Venkatesh a piano alumnus.
Featured this year will be a piece commissioned by the Festival for the ensemble YMusic and Jeffrey Kahane.
Master classes and rehearsals are all open to the public and the intimate environment of SMF infuses the faculty,
